Featured Vendor: Ambrosia Dairy

We interviewed Dan the Cheese Man, who has long been a staple at Jiashan Market. His cheeses are all locally made in Shanghai and the product line just keeps growing! Come try come of Ambrosia Dairy’s creamy and delicious creations this Saturday, September 20th from 11:00-4:00.

How did Ambrosia Dairy get started?

Ambrosia began in 2007 when I met Mrs Chen, who was finding it increasingly difficult to import cheese from Europe. She was looking for someone to help her make cheese here in Shanghai. I designed and built the factory and have been cheese making here ever since!

What is your favorite type of cheese and why?

Double cream Brie. It tastes almost like butter, pure heaven.

What has been your favorite thing about running your own business?

The hours I keep, we cram all the manufacture into the first two or three days of the week. I might have a meeting with chef or someone later in the week, but I’m usually free for tennis on Friday.

Have there been any challenges? If so, how did you overcome them?

The Chinese dairy industry has indeed been challenging over the last few years.  A lot of changes and new regulations. About 70% of dairy companies (mostly small ones) were closed. We have weathered the storm by not cutting corners and focusing on quality product.

What is your favourite thing about the Saturday markets?

The food, the wine, the people? I love the whole vibe there. If the sun is out, and someone is on the guitar, a glass of Staxx wine in hand. It’s a good day. I tell my wife I am “going to work,” but she knows I am having too much fun to call it work.

Do you have any special events you would like people to know about?

Only the Jiashan Market on my calander now. A new batch of Brie coming soon!

What is your favorite place or thing to do in Shanghai?

Taking the kids to the fountain at the new Kerry Centre in Jing An, they love that thing! There is some great food there too.
